Scam artists view major natural disasters as a time to strike the unsuspecting. They might claim the donation you're about to give will go to relief efforts, like the ones in Haiti, but really they're looking to pad their bank account. Police departments and the Better Business Bureau caution that tragedies bring out the scam artists. One of the main ways they try to get your money is through the phone. A United Way spokeswoman says most of the trusted organizations will not place phone calls. There's a lot of marketing for the programs on Facebook or other viral types of efforts, but usually you won't receive a phone call, so if you do get one, I would be suspicious. The best way to donate is always to choose the organization yourslef and then you take the aciton f contacting them.
