Linn County Crash Injures One

A two-vehicle crash in Linn county yesterday resulted in a Mound City man being taken to an Overland Park hospital. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol online crash report, 62-year old Terry Mills was driving a 2008 Chevy Silverado eastbound on 2400 Road northeast of La Cygne and was hit on the passenger side by a semi truck driven by 38-year old Troy Ryan of Clinton, MO. Ryan had been coming out of a driveway into. The impact spun the pickup into the north ditch. Mills was wearing a seat belt, and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for apparently minor injuries. Ryan was no hurt. Both men were alone in their vehicle. The crash happened about 4:15 yesterday afternoon.

Neosho County Crash Kills One

One person is dead following a single-vehicle crash yesterday afternoon in Neosho county. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports 49-year old Vickie Allison of Urbana, Kansas, was killed in the wreck. She was the driver of an eastbound Lincoln Town Car and lost control on K-47 at the Jackson Road intersection, which is about 5 miles west to of the US-59 and K-47 junction. Troopers say Allison drifted off the road to the right, over-corrected and crossed the road into the westbound ditch, and hit the embankment on Jackson road. At that point the car overturned. She was taken to Labette Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Allison was alone in the car, and was not wearing a seat belt.

Crash south of Iola Kills One

Highway Patrol troopers say they don't know why a Waverly man drove off US 169 yesterday morning, causing a crash that ended his life. 55-year old Jerry Hughes was not wearing a seat belt, according to a KHP online crash report. The fatal crash happened just south of Iola about 9:35 yesterday morning. Troopers say Hughes was southbound in a 2010 Nissan when he left the road for an unknown reason, drove through two fences and two fields, and struck a tree. He was taken to Allen County Hospital, but died of his injuries.

Neosho County Crash Injures One

A single-vehicle crash in Neosho county yesterday injured a Topeka woman. Highway Patrol crash reports indicate the wreck happened on K-47 about a mile west of the K-169 junction. Troopers aren't sure why Emetria Rice lost control of her 2001 Hyundai Accent, but say she went into the ditch and struck a utility pole. The crash happened about 8:15pm yesterday. She was wearing a seat belt, and was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital to be checked out for minor injuries.

Crash Near Uniontown Injures Two

Troopers say two people were hurt when they collided Friday morning in Bourbon county. Larry D. Stewart of Bronson and Sharon Middleton of Fort Scott were the drivers of the two vehicles involved, and both were taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. The crash happened about 6am Friday on US 54 at the Uniontown turnoff, according to the highway patrol. Stewart was driving a Ford pickup and was pulling onto 54 from a side road, intending to go east, and swung into the oncoming lane, hitting the westbound Grand Am driven by Middleton. Both were taken to the hospital by ambulance with potentially serious injuries.

Man Dies in Sunday Crash

A Chanute man is dead following a crash yesterday morning near Iola. The Kansas Highway patrol reports 30-year-old Michale Quinteo was driving his pickup eastbound on US-54 when he went left of the center lane and struck a semi trailer just after 8am yesterday. The pickup ended up underneath the trailer of the semi. Neither the driver of the semi nor his passenger was hurt.

US 75 Work Starts Monday

Starting Monday, K-DOT will begin a crack sealing project on U.S. 75 in Woodson County. The work will start at the north city limits of Yates Center and continue north 10.6 miles to the Woodson-Coffey county line. According to Iola Area Construction Engineer Jerod Kelley, the crack sealing is being done to extend the service life of the highway pavement. A Texas company will do the work, which is subject to delays due to rainfall or excessive morning dew. One-lane traffic will be maintained in daytime hours with a pilot car. KDOT expects the project to be finished by November 1.

Bourbon County Crash Tuesday Hurts Bronson Man

The Highway patrol says crash between a parked vehicle and one driving on US 69 resulted in injury to one person yesterday. The wreck was reported shortly before noon in Bourbon county at the US-54, US-690 junction. Troopers say an Iowa man was parked along the shoulder in a semi -- a common practice when drivers reach their maximum hours and have to take a rest break. About 11:40am, troopers report, Charles Williams of Bronson was coming around the ramp from 69 onto 54 in a 1998 Dodge Pickup. He swung slightly too car on the curve and hit the semi trailer and driver's side of the semi. The 64-year old Williams was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. The semi driver was not hurt.

USD 257 Building Trades Home Open House is Next Week

Iola High School Building Trades class members will be showing off the home they built during the program last year, just as work is getting started on this year's project. USD 257 Superintendent Dr. Craig Neuenswander Explains:

Speed Limits to Lower near Erie HS

Neosho County Commissioners say speeds near the new Erie High School need to be slower than they were when the school wasn't there. So they've lowered the speed limit along two roads. Limit signs will be posted soon setting 40mph as the top speed on Pryor Road (North Main Street in Erie) from Marshall Street north to 150th Road and on 150th Road from U.S. 59 Highway east to Queen Road. Enforcement starts Friday.

Linn County Crash Hurts Several

A Sunday afternoon crash in Linn county resulted in four people being taken to the hospital. According to the highway patrol, Roni Elliott of Parker was eastbound on 2400 Road near Parker and tried to make a left hand turn. 26-year old Mandy Lewis of Spring Hill was southbound on 1077 Road and hit the Elliot car before she could complete the turn.

The 21-year old Elliott was taken by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, as was Lewis. Two passengers in Elliot's car were also taken to the hospital, while a fourth person in the car was uninjured.

Teen Driver Hurt in Monday Wreck

A teen-aged driver was hurt yesterday in a wreck near Unionville. Highway Patrol troopers say 16-year old Zakary Hueston was northbound on 85th street in Bourbon County about 3:25 yesterday afternoon when he lost control. He left the road and rolled into the east ditch just south of US 54. Hueston was thrown from the pickup as it rolled. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center with apparently minor injuries.

Accord Paves Way for Sales Tax Campaign

Now that Iola and Allen County leaders have come to accord on the hospital issue and the county has approved putting a sales tax increase to a vote in November, you can expect to hear much more about the issue. Supporters of the sales tax as a funding method for a new hospital have been organizing since the middle of last month, about the time recommendations were made to city and county leaders to build a new facility rather than renovating the existing ACH. Jim Gilpin of Iola and Don Copley of Humboldt are co-chairs of the campaign. Cost of the campaign, all of which must be raised privately, is expected to be about $10,000.
