Students who've just completed kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible for this summer's SAFE BASE program. The program just got underway this morning, and it's three days a week in Iola. Each Thursday in June the students are on the road. The learning experience is safe for kids, and parents can be part of it too. Parents can even ride along for the out-of-town experiences on Thursdays. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings each week are broken into reading, math, gardening, cooking and physical education activities, with the rotation depending on the day and class levels. The first road trip this week takes students to Strong City to learn about the Old West.
