Boeing Closure Will Not Affect Spirit Plans In Chanute

Plans by Spirit Aerosystems to open a manufacturing facility in Chanute will apparently not be affected by the high-profile announcement by Boeing that it's closing its plant in Wichita. The aircraft manufacturing giant will be laying off thousands of workers as it transfers many of its activities to its Seattle-area headquarters and elsewhere. But city officials in Chanute say Boeing's departure is not expected to have any impact on Spirit's plans there. Spirit's Chanute plant will initially perform subassembly work on underwing aircraft components as part of a multi-phased project. It also will take on other programs. Company officials have said they expect to create thirty-five jobs at the Chanute plant by the end of this year and an eventual total of up to 150 new jobs. City officials say Spirit has no plans to make any changes when Boeing packs up.
