Saturday Fire Displaces Iola Family

Smoke and water damage from a weekend fire is forcing one Iola family to stay somewhere else temporarily. The Red Cross is assisting Ben Culbertson's family following the fire Saturday night. Firefighters were called to Culbertson’s home after smoke was seen coming from a second-story bedroom. The smoke came from an overloaded junction box, according to Iola Fire Department reports. A wire had burned in two and nearby wall insulation had been smoldering, as had a pair of ceiling joists. The Register reports firefighters sprayed foam onto the smoldering pieces, cutting extra holes into the wall to ensure all of the hot spots had been extinguished.
