Car-Deer Crashes Injure Several Over Weekend

Three deer-related crashes injured area residents this weekend.

The first was Friday evening, on K-39 in Wilson county. Humboldt Police Chief Brian Dillow told troopers three deer jumped into the road about 3 miles west of Chanute, around 45 minutes after sunset Friday. He hit one of the deer with his patrol car, a 2008 Crown Victoria. Dillow was taken by ambulance to Neosho Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. A second occupant, 36-year old Jeffery Collins of Chanute, as also taken to the hospital for treatment.

The second happened Friday night just before midnight near La Harpe. Troopers say 17-year old Rachel Smith of Moran was taken to Allen County Hospital for evaluation after a deer ran out in front of her. She was eastbound on US 54, just a mile east of La Harpe. Troopers say she was alone in the car. She swerved to miss the deer and drove into the south ditch, where she hit a fence, then drove into a pasture where she came to a stop on all four wheels.

A deer is also to blame for a crash yesterday south of Humboldt that injured a Chanute woman. Troopers say it was about 9:30 last night when 52-year old Cynthia Shockey was southbound on US 169. A deer ran onto the road and hit her vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. A passenger in the van, 27-year old Brandy Gensweider of Chanute, was taken to Neosho Memorial for treatment of possible injuries.
